My Japanese Needs Some Serious Work

I just finished taking my placement test for my Japanese class and I totally bombed it. It was ALL grammar. Grammar is hard enough in English, much less in Japanese. Oh well, I'm not too bumbed. I didn't really expect to do very well on it anyway. After all, the reason I'm here is to learn more and to further my Japanese language skills. And anyway, my oral interview went really well right up until she asked me what time it was. I've never been very good with time.

Tomorrow we'll meet our hostfamilies. I'm a little bit nervous. I'm nervous they won't understand me, I won't understand them. I'm worried about being isolated. But at least I'm making friends! The Hokusei International Student Commitee, the group of Hokusei studen,ts that welcome the international kids, had a party last night. We ate decent food and tried to work past the language barrier. It was a good time.

I will, hopefully, have pictures for you next time I post!

Love and kisses.

Hello from cold Colorado. It's been so cold here, I've had to wear long sleeves. I know it's hard to believe, but it is September.
If you have time and want to see pictures from the wedding, go to:
www.acherishedphoto.com/sarakenny
There are some great ones of you having a good time at the reception.
Have fun, make Japanese friends, and learn lots. But mostly have fun!
love, Aunt Rosie xoxo

It won't be long before you'll be speaking like a native... well, maybe not a native, but more than enough to communicate. It should be absolutely beautiful there now as most tourists to Japan visit in the spring for cherry blossoms or in the fall. I want to take Uncle Cliff in the fall sometime. It's my favorite time of year there. Let me know when you try the bread, if you have a western bed, and give us some info about the women you're living with. Isn't it great that everyone is so friendly. I can't wait for you to tell us how many stares you get since you're tall! Also, don't forget to give us the update on all the new foods you try, things you like and don't like. That way, we can watch you change during the three months. Most of all, Kelsey, enjoy! Love, J

I just got off the phone with Kelsey. She sends hugs and kisses to everyone! She's with her host family now but they don't have internet - it's too expensive. So, she'll not be able to post until tomorrow when she gets to classes.
They went on a picnic today in a National Forest and she saw a beautiful falls. She took plenty of pictures :) and she'll post them later. She said she's tried everything they've put in front of her, but hasn't really ate a full meal yet! She tried mushroom and seaweed soup but couldn't finish it! Thank goodness the bread is good!
Her host family consists of a mother who is retired but volunteers at a local school occasionally, a grandmother and a daughter, Kimmie - 36, who works at a hospital. Kimmie speaks a little English, but doesn't like to because it gives her headaches! She has a room by herself with a Western Bed. And, her family lives in a house and they are only 10 minutes from school. There's one boy who has an hour commute to school! I think Kelsey is probably the closest to school.
I think Kelsey's biggest frustration is the communication and language barrier. Her Japanese class starts tomorrow so she'll do fine once she gets back into the language. Her Japanese class is 3 hours each day. She's also taking three electives - religion, Japanese Business and something else I can't recall. Those classes start next week.
There's other international students from Liverpool, Korea, Canada and the United States. So, she'll have the opportunity to meet new friends from all over - how exciting!
Hopefully, she'll be able to post a message and picture tomorrow!
Love ya Kelsey! Mom <3

CRAZY! I miss you. I hope you're having loads of fun in Japan and I'm sure by the end of this shindig you won't want to leave! (But you should come back...)

School is going really well for me! My classes are going to be none other that challenging but I'm extremely excited to get started! Even though I already have an iMac, I get to buy a Macbook Pro next semester! WEEEE! Quite exciting. And I'll get it pimped out with all the amazing Creative Suite 3 programs.

I have loads of stories for you so I can't wait to chat. :D

Hi Kelsey: Just a short note, it sure isn't very nice here today. We went to church and then took a walk. I talked to Mitch this afternoon. Take care and grandpa and I love you. Grandma

One thing I forgot to tell you - the only thing cheap in Japan are their beautiful dishes. So, get someone to take you to one of the department stores like Takashimaya or Hankyu store and go to the area where they are always having dish sales. Over the years I brought some gorgeous plates, bowls, etc. You can get something really beautiful for your mom at a reasonable price. Lori, don't read this!
